Books Galore

These are some books I found particularly helpful at different stages of Recovery. Do have any faves to add? If so I’d love to hear from you…

Smashed: Growing Up a Drunk Girl by Koren Zailckas

This book destroyed me. It’s devastating. But worth every minute.

Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp

This woman knows. She just knows. Irrespective of which decade it was written in. She’s sill relevant now. Every word.

Turnabout: Help for the Woman Alcoholic by Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick

It’s dated but it’s a great insight into the foundation Women for Sobriety.

Happy Hours: Alcohol in a Woman’s Life by Devon Jersild

A really interesting insight into how alcohol abuse effects women, featuring interviews from women of various ages and backgrounds.

I also want to recommend the excellent, engaging, brutal memoir: Drunk Mom. Ps thanks for these amazing books and your blog… All of it. Wonderful.

I found ‘In the realm of hungry ghosts’ by Gabor Mate to be hugely helpful. I was already sober when I read it (I got sober through Yoga teacher training, and by learning what Yoga was truly about). Dr Mate’s book helped me to understand myself so much better, to understand my addiction, to work out where it came from (I had a MASSIVE 3am lightbulb moment that totally freed me from years of feeling like a lesser person) and gave me much more confidence in my sobriety. HIGHLY recommended!
